About the SIRJ
Built in 1849 by James Whittaker, the Sir John Franklin Hotel (affectionately known as The SIRJ) was the leading hotel in Kapunda in its time. Due to its successful copper mines, Kapunda became the birthplace of South Australia’s ‘Copper Kingdom’ boom, with much of our town’s infrastructure flourishing as a result. The Sir John Franklin Hotel was named after the Arctic explorer and Tasmanian Governor, Sir John Franklin.
